The aerospace industry is characterized by a highly complex supply chain, beginning with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and extending to recycling vendors and scrap facilities. An average commercial aerospace OEM collaborates with over 200 tier 1 suppliers and more than 10,000 tier 2 and tier 3 suppliers. This vast network underscores the challenges of sourcing and managing aircraft spare parts, where every component's journey involves significant logistical hurdles. As demand for air travel surges—reaching passenger revenues of more than $700 billion in 2024—the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) industry faces numerous challenges. These include securing critical materials, managing part deliveries, navigating staff shortages, and addressing the impacts of inflation and geopolitical crises. Each of these factors heightens the urgency for improved supply chain visibility and efficiency.Despite the Industry's inherent circular nature —where parts can be reused, repaired, or recycled—traditional procurement methods often hinder transparency and agility. The reliance on paperwork and manual processes in areas such as quality assurance, certification, and logistics creates bottlenecks that slow operations. This inefficiency not only increases the risk of errors and delays but also undermines sustainability efforts. In response to these challenges, the industry requires innovative digital models that leverage technology to enhance collaboration among stakeholders including recycling vendors. This article explores how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can elevate sustainable practices in procurement and certification, benefiting all players in the supply chain—from OEMs to recycling vendors.

The aviation Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) industry relies on a complex, global supply chain involving airlines, parts suppliers, freight forwarders, and repair shops. Despite the interconnected nature of these stakeholders, sourcing, contracting, and logistics processes remain fragmented, with vital data distributed across multiple systems. Manual communication and paperwork-reliant workflows hinder real-time collaboration, while a lack of end-to-end visibility slows decision-making. This results in inefficiencies such as redundant data entries, stockouts, rushed orders, and increased costs. Improved data sharing could significantly enhance safety, reduce aircraft downtime, and optimize operational efficiency.

The aviation ecosystem depends on the smooth functioning of MRO processes to keep aircraft safely in service. However, the industry face increasing challenges in managing spare parts inventory and supply chain management as procurement technologies evolve further. Manual tracking processes and fragmented legacy systems strain to handle growing complexity across the global MRO network.
